Folate and B12 nutrition levels for psychological distress

The interesting fact in this post from Matt Lovell was how much higher than the RDI levels that were given. Often the RDI is nowhere near enough to have any positive effect.

Folate and B12 for brain boosting during the winter blues… Sports Nutrition Vlog When you’re down, you may also not be as sharp as normal… Just ask these 900 elderly patients who suffered from varying degrees of psychological distress! In a randomized, controlled, 2 year trial, daily supplementation with folate and B12 helped their distressed, depressed brains get back on track. Taking 400 ug folic acid (2xRDI) and 100 ug vitamin B12 (40xRDI) was found to be associated with improvements in cognitive status compared to placebo.

The researchers used a validated telephone interview to assess cognition, and revealed statistically significant improvements after 24 months of supplementation.

Long-term supplementation promoted improvement in cognitive functioning in this depressive population; particularly in immediate and delayed memory performance. SO, if you’re suffering from the winter blues, be active with some B-vitamins!
